GRADE B WOOD AND RECYCLING

We also recycle wood

Every year in France, 6 million tonnes of wood waste are collected. Given the climate challenges we face, using this waste wood as fuel appears to be a responsible solution for producing renewable energy to replace fossil fuels.

Energy required to run Norske Skog Golbey’s production facilities

Norske Skog Golbey needs more than 1 terawatt-hour of energy to run its production facilities. To reach its production objectives, it produces steam by burning its own production waste and waste wood in its biomass boiler coupled with a 12.5 MW turbo-alternator unit.

At the same time, as part of its diversification, the company is working with the project company GVE (Green Valley Energie) to build a biomass cogeneration boiler coupled with a 25 MW turbo-alternator to supply steam to its facilities and to its neighbour, Pavatex. Thanks to these biomass boilers, our mill generates renewable energy.

350,000 tonnes

Amount of demolition wood needed to fuel the biomass boilers annually

To supply the two boilers, Norske Skog Golbey created a subsidiary, GV Bois, in which it has a 90% stake, in 2023. GV Bois buys 350,000 tonnes of waste wood per year, commonly known as grade B wood (furniture, demolition, construction, etc.). The subsidiary functions as a central purchasing unit.

Moreover, it also gathers Norske Skog Golbey’s skills in buying industrial wood to supply its partners Pavatex, Circa and the Gaiffe sawmill. Drawing on an Industrial and Territorial Ecology approach, these partners rely on the skills of Norske Skog Golbey’s subsidiary to buy wood for their processes (logs and sawmill by-products).
